• étymologie : le terme est d'abord lié à la chasse et désigne la piste laissée par un animal que l'on cherche à tuer (voir miga, le “gibier”, animal sauvage paisible - par opposition à l'animal sauvage féroce ou à l'animal domestique - racine mṛ : tuer ; cf. marati) ; il désignera par extension toute voie ouverte par un passage régulier ; son emploi en bouddhisme est lié à l'idée que le “Sentier” enseigné par le buddha Gotama est le même que celui emprunté par tous les précédents buddha(s) ; cf. Nagara-sutta (Saṃyutta Nikāya 12. 65) : “J'ai vu une ancienne voie, une ancienne route, sur laquelle ont voyagé les Correctement Eveillés par eux-mêmes des temps passés. Et quelle est cette ancienne voie, cette ancienne route, sur laquelle auraient voyagé les Correctement Eveillés par eux-mêmes des temps passés ? Rien d'autre que ce noble octuple sentier…”
