**buddha** (1) （**adj．**） [med．-pass．pp．of bujjhati，cp．Epic Sk．buddha] （a） understood S．I，35=60 （su-dub-buddha very difficult to understand）．-- （b） having attained enlightenment，wise A．IV，449; PvA．16 （buddh’ādayo），60 （=ariya）．Usually appld to the Bhagavant （Gotama） M．I，386 （one of the adj．describing Gotama to Nigaṇṭha Nāthaputta）; Sn．993．The true brāhmaṇa is buddha，e．g．Sn．622，643，646．

**buddha** [pp. budh_1] a. m. n. f. buddhā éveillé, éclairé, savant, sage — m. bd. personne ayant réalisé l'Éveil libérateur | bd. épith. du Buddha Śākyamuni «l'Éveillé»; né prince Siddhārtha Gautama à Kapilavastu du roi śākya Śuddhodana et de la reine Māyā_1 (vers 485 ant.); à l'âge de 16 ans il épousa la princesse Yaśodharā dont il eut un fils, Rāhula; à l'âge de 29 ans il quitta son palais pour pratiquer l'ascétisme comme moine errant pendant 6 ans; il reçut l'Éveil [bodhi] à Gayā; il fit son premier sermon en proclamant les Quatre Nobles Vérités [āryasatya] dans le parc aux gazelles [mṛgadāva] de Sāranātha, et fonda la communauté du saṅgha; il entra dans le parinirvāṇa à l'âge de 80 ans; il est considéré par certains dévots de Viṣṇu [vaiṣṇava] comme son 9e avatāra (car il prépare la fin du kaliyuga en diffusant une fausse doctrine); cf.
